Ohio Utica Shale Permits - Updated Through February 24, 2012

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has issued 58 additional permits to drill into the Utica Shale since my last update on Dec 14, 2011.  The data covers permits issued through 2/24/2012, and as usual Chesapeake Energy (CHK) received the majority of permits with 48.  Six other operators received the balance of the well permits issued by the state:

Devon Energy (DVN), CONSOL Energy (CNX), Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Anadarko Petroleum (APC) each received two permits.  Enervest Operating LLC received five permits to drill in the Utica Shale. HG Energy, a private oil and gas company that is headquartered in Marietta, Georgia, received 4 permits.

Gulfport Energy Spuds First Utica Horizontal Well

Gulfport Energy (GPOR) reported that the company has started drilling its first horizontal Utica Shale well in Ohio.  The company has a total of five drilling permits on file with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and plans to add a second drilling rig here in April 2012.

Gulfport Energy has approximately 125,000 gross or 62,500 net acres under lease that are prospective for the Utica Shale.

Magnum Hunter Resources Adds To Utica Shale Position

Magnum Hunter Resources (MHR) reported the purchase of additional leasehold in Ohio that is prospective for the Utica Shale formation.

Magnum Hunter Resources purchased approximately 15,558 gross or 12,186 net acres for $24.8 million, or a net price of $2,037 per acre.  The acreage is located in Noble County, Ohio.

Magnum Hunter Resources said that the majority of the acreage was held by production from shallower formations.

Magnum Hunter Resources said that the acquired acreage is close to the company’s existing position in Washington and Noble Counties, and brings its total position prospective for the Utica Shale to 23,214 gross or 17,316 net acres.
