Utica Shale Permits By County

Carroll County has received 128 well permits to drill into the Utica Shale from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the most of any county in Ohio. Columbiana and Harrison Counties are second and third with 49 and 32 permits, respectively.  The full list is below and covers through August 20, 2012.

Utica Shale Permit Map - August 2012

Here is the latest map of drilling activity in Ohio targeting the Utica Shale Point Pleasant formation.  There have been 321 wells permitted in the state between August 20, 2009, and August 3, 2012.   The leading public operators include:

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) – 225 permits

Anadarko Petroleum (APC) – 12 permits

Hess Corporation (HES) – 9 permits

Devon Energy (DVN) – 8 permits

CONSOL Energy (CNX) – 7 permits

Gulfport Energy (GPOR) – 7 permits

Gulfport Energy Drilling Seventh Utica Shale Well

Gulfport Energy (GPOR) started drilling four gross Utica Shale wells during the second quarter of 2012.   The company’s first horizontal well was drilled in February 2012.

Gulfport Energy said that the Wagner 1-38H was put onto production at an initial production rate of 17.1 million cubic feet of natural gas and 432 barrels of condensate per day.  The well is also expected to produce between 41 and 110 barrels of natural gas liquids per day for every one million cubic feet of natural gas production.

Gulfport Energy is operating two rigs in the Utica Shale and is currently drilling the company’s next two wells, bringing the total to seven. The company has 62,500 net acres under lease.
