Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) recently entered into a joint venture with Rice Energy, LP to develop its acreage in southwestern Pennsylvania that is prospective for the Marcellus Shale. The acreage is located in Greene and Washington Counties.
Alpha Natural Resources has 18,000 acres in the area that is prospective for the Marcellus Shale, and has commenced drilling the first of four wells planned for 2010. The company believes that it has 100 drilling locations on this acreage in the Marcellus Shale.
