The Eagle Ford Shale is Cretaceous era shale deposit in South Texas. It lies at a depth of 4,000-12,000 feet, and at its maximum is 300 feet thick. The Eagle Ford Shale was considered the source rock for the Austin Chalk, which lies above the Eagle Ford Shale.
The Eagle Ford Shale runs across several different counties, including Dimmit, Maverick, LaSalle, Webb and DeWitt Counties.
Many different exploration and production companies are active in the Eagle Ford Shale, including St. Mary Land & Exploration Company (SM), Petrohawk Energy (HK), Murphy Oil (MUR), Rosetta Resources (ROSE) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD). ___________________________________________________________________
