The Fayetteville Shale has had a large economic impact on the State of Arkansas. In May 2006, Sam M. Walton College of Business conducted a study on the impact of this Fayetteville Shale activity.
The study was sponsored by Southwestern Energy (SWN), which is the acknowledged leader in the Fayetteville Shale. The report concluded the following:
"From 2005 to 2008, it is estimated that operators will make direct expenditures of about $3.8 billion in leasing land and mineral rights, drilling, and other activities and that these expenditures will be responsible for total economic activity of about $5.5 billion in the state of Arkansas."
"The creation of approximately 9,683 jobs in the aggregate by year 2008 and about $357.7 million of state and local tax revenues."
